R&B and soul are how I set tone. Early in a night, 90s and 00s R&B and classic soul give people something familiar to settle into — room to talk, drink and warm up before the floor fills.

They also give a set emotional range. Not every moment should be peak energy; the contrast between a soulful early section and a high-energy later one is what makes the big moments actually feel big.
